February 24, 2003 - April
5, 2003 Fine FiberArts will present an exhibition of work by 25 Southern California artists, all of whom have created a work of fiber art as part of an extraordinary project. Curated by San Diego artist Candy Kuhl, the project is modeled on the game of Telephone (or Chinese Whispers). In place of a whispered message, each artist received the work of another artist, and was asked to express his or her interpretation of it, in a new work of art. The dialog that developed along the way was free of oral communication: artists received untitled artworks through an intermediary, and were asked not to talk about their work. The exhibition will bring together all of the works of art, in order of creation. There will be a catalog. The artistic process will be illustrated through a cross-section of fiber art, including fabric work, baskets, weaving, wire and beadwork, surface ornament, book arts, and a variety of other media. Viewers will be able to follow the artists’ inspiration, from conception to construction and revision, right down to the naming of the piece. Through the decisions and interpretations embodied in the work, viewers will gain a glimpse into the mind of the artist. Art lovers, students and collectors will all find something of interest.
